Young Buriram United was voted ASEAN’s best football player, born on or after January 1, 2002
Buriram United striker Suphanat Mueanta has been crowned the inaugural winner of the NXGN ASEAN 2021 after being voted the region’s top teenage footballer.
Journalists from everywhere Goals ASEAN Editions voted for the game’s brightest prodigies, born on or after January 1, 2002.
Suphanat beat strong competition to become the first winner of the men’s award, with Utrecht striker Bagus Kahfi and Kortrijk striker Luqman Hakim finishing second and third respectively.
The Thai prodigy is being honored for an outstanding start to his first-team career at the Chang Arena, during which he broke countless records, including becoming the youngest goalscorer in Thailand’s Ligue 1.
The 18-year-old is also the youngest player to hit the net in AFC Champions League history, and has already made his international debut at senior level, appearing in defeat 1- 0 for Thailand in a friendly against Vietnam in May 2019.
Bagus Kahfi has emerged as Suphanat’s closest challenger after a year in which he earned a transfer to Eredivisie Utrecht squad, after recovering from a serious injury he suffered while wearing the Garuda Select jersey.
The striker is one of many young Indonesians moving to Europe and will be looking to take the next step in his career in 2021-2022.
Luqman, meanwhile, completes the podium after joining Belgian squad Kortrijk and making his first-team debut against European giants Anderlecht.
The forward also made his senior debut in Malaysia and remains his country’s biggest hope of becoming successful abroad.
