SuperSport United vs Orlando Pirates preview: kick-off time, TV channel, team news

The Buccaneers resume their domestic affairs against a second team on the table in a contest that promises to be a thrill

The Orlando Pirates continue their pursuit of Premier Soccer League leaders Mamelodi Sundowns when they visit SuperSport United for Wednesday’s fixture at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Two weeks after their last involvement in a domestic game when they sidelined Cape Town City 2-0 in a home league clash, Pirates will return to PSL business.

Eight points behind Sundowns in fifth place, the Buccaneers’ credentials are still intact, even though they face a difficult task to catch up with the table winners.

Their SuperSport opponents have already made their title intentions known and are currently ranked second in the paper and trailing Downs by four points, although they have played one more game.

For Mtasatsantsa, it’s another date against a Soweto giant after holding Kaizer Chiefs 1-1 at FNB Stadium four days earlier.

After SuperSport coach Kaitano Tembo replaced Lucky Mohomi in the 36th minute in the draw against the Chiefs, there were concerns that the midfielder could be injured.

But Tembo stepped in to allay concerns, saying it was a tactical substitution.

The Zimbabwean coach, however, complained that his side showed a bit of fatigue during this match.

Midfielder Teboho Mokoena has not shown up for SuperSport since mid-January and the club have not released an update on his state of fitness.

The Pirates are still facing injury issues, especially early on, which has caused serious concern for manager Josef Zinnbauer.

Forwards Zakhele Lepasa and Tshegofatso Mabasa are already absent, leaving Zinnbauer with Jean-Marc Makusu as the only leader available.

This saw Makusu win his first start for the Pirates last Sunday for their 1-0 Caf Confederation Cup victory over Jwaneng Galaxy.

To bolster attacking options, Zinnbauer also launched Austin Muwowo for the first time since the Zambian joined the Soweto giants last season.

The German tactician has sweated on the physical form of Frank Mhango and Thembinkosi Lorch which can be used as a makeshift number nine.

In case the injured attackers do not recover in time, Zinnbauer would be forced to use Deon Hotto, Terrence Dzvukamanja or Azola Tshobeni as attackers.

Match preview

The Pirates start this match with a four-game winning streak in all competitions in their last matches.

It’s the kind of form Zinnbauer could have asked for before facing a tough team like SuperSport.

While the Pirates’ last four wins include two Caf Confederation Cup games as well as a Nedbank Cup game, they are keen to create a cohesive run on the league front.

Before recording the victory, their last league outing, a 2-0 victory over Cape Town City, they were beaten 2-0 by Golden Arrows in the previous match.

This defeat by Arrows was preceded by the 2-1 Soweto derby to dismiss the Kaizer Chiefs, while TS Galaxy held them 1-1 after a 1-0 victory over Maritzburg United.

SuperSport has also struggled for consistency in PSL, having recorded two wins, as many draws and one loss in their last five matches which have seen lost opportunities to overtake Sundowns.

The last meeting between Pirates and SuperSport ended 2-1 in favor of the Buccaneers who had to come back from behind in November 2020.
