Gareth Widdop’s impact has been praised by Warrington head coach Steve Price

Steve Price is confident Gareth Widdop will be an asset to the England squad after celebrating his recall to the international fold with an 18-point goal in Warrington Wolves’ 38-18 win over Wakefield Trinity.

Widdop, who was a regular in England under previous coaches Steve McNamara and Wayne Bennett, had been left out of Wane’s initial squad preparing for this fall’s Rugby Union World Cup, but his recent eye-catching displays for Wolves saw him regain his place on the squad this week.

And he scored the recall with one try, appeared in two more and scored seven goals in as many attempts – the majority off the sideline – as Wolves rebounded from their disappointing loss in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup against Castleford the previous weekend.

Widdop plays again in Wolves win

Gareth Widdop celebrated his recall to England with a total of 18 points to help Warrington secure a 38-18 victory over Wakefield.

“I’m really happy for Gaz,” Price said. “I think he has been the best player in the competition and will be a great asset to England.

“At the moment it reflects what he did in the pre-season. He’s well positioned and is playing very well.”

The Wolves boss was also delighted with his side’s response after their disappointing Challenge Cup semi-final loss to Castleford.

Meanwhile, winger Josh Charnley was back in tryouts after a barren spell as he earned a hat-trick in the win.

“Josh got down a bit and it was a nice reward for his persistence and persistence and it showed tonight that he has a good clean ball and I’m really happy for him because he works hard at his craft.” , Price said.

“Sometimes in this game it’s not always the way you want it to be, but it was tonight, and I’m really happy for him.”

Wakefield coach Chris Chester revealed his team only arrived at Halliwell Jones Stadium 45 minutes before kick-off after a three-hour drive due to problems on the freeway, but did given no excuse for the defeat of his team.

“For the first 20 minutes, we looked like a team that had just spent three hours on the bus, but that’s no excuse,” Chester said.

Westerman and Widdop are called up for England

Joe Westerman and Warrington half-back Gareth Widdop have been recalled to Shaun Wane’s England squad.

“It wasn’t ideal and we had to tie the players down, but it was just one of those things you can’t plan for.

“But after saying we weren’t good enough in that 20-25 minute opening that we really struggled.

“I thought our ruck control was poor and the contacts in the middle weren’t up to par and once Warrington starts playing fast it’s very difficult to get him back.”
