Sports : Spectacular goals have seen Patrik Schick compared to Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp and hurt Scotland at Euro 2020

Euro 2020 has only just begu but Patrik Schick’s stunning strike against Scotland will surely be the goal of the tournament.

The Czech Republic star, incredibly, beat David Marshall from the halfway line as the Scots suffered a 2-0 defeat on Monday, and he headed in the opener too.

Scotland had no answers for the brilliant Schick, who scored twice at Hampden Park, including one from 50 yards

On his stunning goal, Schick told talkSPORT: “In the first half I was checking the goalkeeper and where he was standing. I already knew he was standing really high so when the ball came I just did a quick check with my eyes, I saw he was standing high so I tried and the ball went perfectly.

“I wasn’t surprised because I wanted to do that. I was just very happy the ball went perfectly.

“It’s only the first game and I expect more beautiful goals so we will see [if it’s goal of the tournament].”

The way Schick explains it makes it sound so simple but as you can see from the clip below it’s anything but.

You may not have heard of Schick before his exploits against Scotland but he’s certainly highly rated and has even been compared to Arsenal and Netherlands icon Dennis Bergkamp.

“You’re probably sitting there thinking it’s heresy comparing a current footballer in the same sentence as Dennis Bergkamp but don’t pin it on me, people have been doing it in Italy for years,” European football expert Andy Brassell told talkSPORT.

Brassell adds that these comparisons have been going on ever since he broke through at Sampdoria at the age of 20 in 2016.

You’re doing something right if you’re being compared to the great Bergkamp

He got a move to Roma a year later, the Serie A club forking out a club-record £37.8million for his services.

Things didn’t work for Schick in the Italian capital but he rebuilt his career with a loan spell at RB Leipzig and is now playing for Bayer Leverkusen.

Shick and the Czech Republic will play England on June 22 and Brassell believes Gareth Southgate’s men need to be wary of the player.

He added: “Schick is a special talent who you have to build your team around. He’s revived his career in Germany – he had a very good 2019/20 season with Leipzig. They couldn’t sign him permanently so he went to Leverkusen.

Patrik Schick

Schick’s performance at Hampden Park suggests he could be one of the stars of Euro 2020

“What’s brilliant about Schick is that he’s big and strong enough to be that target man but he’s also got that lightness of touch to create for others and score goals.”

“The Czechs might not have the majority of the game against England, despite that excellent core of Slavia Prague players who made the Europa League quarter-finals, Schick is the man who can make the magic happen with very little of the ball.”
