Eleven-time world champion Slater, who has not disclosed his vaccination status, has defended tennis world number one Novak Djokovic after the unvaccinated Serb was arrested and subsequently expelled by authorities ahead of the Australian Open.

Two World Surf League (WSL) championship events are scheduled for Victoria and Western Australia in April and May. It remains unclear if Slater, 49, will participate.

“I think we’ve been pretty clear with the Novak Djokovic no vax, no play deal,” Hunt told Australian broadcaster Channel 9.

“It’s a pretty simple message, no matter the sport, we’re impartial. I hope he (Slater) gets vaccinated and I hope he competes.”

The WSL did not impose vaccines on competitors, but encouraged them to take the vaccine, warning they could face “significant” challenges if they choose not to.
