Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has been named Western Conference team captain, the 18th time he’s been named to the All-Star team, tying Kobe Bryant for the second all-time spot behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who has 19.

It also means the 37-year-old has served as captain in each of the five years the NBA has used the current system to pick teams.

James will return to Cleveland for the All-Star Game, which takes place on February 10, the city where he started his NBA career in 2003 and where he won a title in 2016.

James is joined by Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant, Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic and Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins as starters for the West.

This is Curry’s eighth All-Star Game selection, while for reigning NBA MVP Jokic it is the Serbian big man’s fourth selection.

Both Morant and Wiggins will be making their debuts, with Morant having a breakout season with the ascendant Grizzlies while Wiggins played a big part in the Warriors’ excellent season.

Wiggins described finding out he was a starter as “breathtaking”.

“I was taking my pre-game nap and my daughter and my daughter woke me up and said, ‘You’re a starter, you’re a starter.’ I thought I was dreaming for a second. I thought, ‘What’s going on?’ It was a good way to learn that I made it to All-Star, and I’m grateful for that,” he told the media.

“I’ve worked a lot and found a home here. Hopefully I can continue and it’s not the last.”

Kevin Durant will captain the Eastern Conference team, meaning it’s the same set of All-Star captains as in 2021.

It’s unclear if the Brooklyn Nets star will actually feature in the game as he continues his recovery from a sprained knee ligament.

Chicago Bulls forward DeMar DeRozan, Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid and Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo will join Durant as a 12-time All-Star.

This is the sixth selection for “Greek Freak” – tying Abdul-Jabbar’s Bucks franchise record for selections – fifth for Embiid and second for Young.

For DeRozan, the Bulls star had a resurgent season, helping Chicago to second place in the Eastern Conference.

The announcement of DeRozan’s fifth All-Star selection was made by teammate Zach LaVine — who also wasn’t named to the team — during the flight to the Bulls’ next game.

Fan votes accounted for 50% of the vote, with a panel of media and current players each accounting for 25%.

Reserves for the game will be announced Feb. 3 and will be voted on by each conference’s head coaches.
