Sports : Jamie O’Hara reveals Billericay Town tried to sign Football Manager icon Freddy Adu, who was tipped to become the next Pele

Billericay Town were no strangers to a surprise signing but this one surely would have topped the lot.

talkSPORT’s Jamie O’Hara, who used to play for and manage the non-league side, revealed how there was once a conversation about attempting to sign Football Manager icon Freddy Adu.

Adu never quite lived up to his early hype, however

Anyone who played the Football Manager game in the early 2000s would have signed the American sensation, who was tipped to achieve great things in real life.

However, he failed to live up to his ‘next Pele’ tag and has had a journeyman career where he’s represented 15 clubs.

He never made it to England, but O’Hara told talkSPORT on Wednesday that Billericay once considered trying to snap him up.

They had signed a number of ex-Premier League stars, including O’Hara, Jermaine Pennant and Paul Konchesky. However, this would have been the most audacious of the lot had it come off.

An Adu acquisition would have been befitting of the Billericay Town circus

But any hope of Adu joining the Essex-based side were extinguished pretty early on due to issues with him being able to get a work permit.

Adu burst onto the scene, signing for DC United as a 14-year-old. It made him the youngest American ever to sign a major league professional contract in any team sport.

He represented the United States 17 times although the highest profile tournament he ever played for them was at the 2008 Olympics.

Perhaps not the one that got away as far as O’Hara and Billericay are concerned.
