Burnley are set to miss out on signing Ashley Young, with the Inter Milan veteran reportedly set to make a shock return to Aston Villa.
The Mirror report that the 35-year-old will leave the San Siro this summer as a free agent.
He looked poised to join Sean Dyche’s men earlier in the week following encouraging talks.
Villa, however, swiftly moved in and are set to land Young, who played for them from 2006-2011, making 190 appearances.
He had also been linked with another of his former clubs, Watford.
It’s understood that Young has been impressed by Villa’s progress under Dean Smith and believes they can challenge for Europe in 2021/22.
Young was happy with the terms on offer by Burnley, which included a one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months, before Villa hijacked the deal.
The free agent rejected the opportunity to remain with the Serie A champions Inter, while it’s also claimed he turned down the chance to return to Vicarage Road.
