Pep Guardiola has been accused of ‘costing’ Man City a very first Champions League trophy.
Kai Havertz’s goal made the difference as the Citizens suffered a 1-0 loss to Chelsea in Porto.
The daring selection of Guardiola’s squad, which did not include any starting midfielder with Fernandinho and Rodri on the bench, did not bear fruit.
The Spaniard also started Raheem Sterling, who had only scored once in his last 15 games, which allowed Phil Foden to be moved deeper into midfield, despite the young player having played on the left wing for much of the season.
Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara was quick to rate Guardiola, whom he called “shame”.
He told the Sports Bar on talkSPORT: “I couldn’t believe what I was watching.
“It’s one of the worst performances I’ve seen from Manchester City in a long time. Bottle jobs. And an absolute disaster of a team selection of Pep Guardiola.
“I can’t believe it went so badly in such a great time.
“Chelsea were brilliant, they were solid, they were organized. They were all over Man City in the first half. They had their number.
“Guardiola was so wrong with the selection of the team without a starting midfielder. If Timo Werner could have shot it would have been 3-0 at halftime. They were everywhere.
“Man City haven’t really created a single clear chance apart from where Foden was and [Antonio] Rudiger made a brilliant tackle.
“Reece James had Sterling in his pocket. I can’t believe Sterling even started the game the form he was in.
“I couldn’t believe what I was watching. It was a shame for Pep Guardiola.
At least one of the Rodri or Fernandinho had started 59 of Man City’s 60 games this season, however, it wasn’t until the 64th minute that the latter came on in Porto.
O’Hara insists Guardiola’s decision not to change teams at half-time showed “arrogance”.
He added: “We could see straight away that Chelsea were going into their pockets. [Ilkay] Gundogan wants to support, he is not a starting midfielder!
“The most important player on your team is the presenter – the player who brings everyone together, the dictator, which is why they signed Rodri.
“Fernandinho has been one of the best players of all time because they are your cornerstone in your team.
“Look at how good N’Golo Kante was because when he’s by your side you know how to defend, you know he’s going to be there, you know as a midfielder you can go push because someone ‘one is going to be there to protect your back four.
“John Stones and Ruben Dias had their worst games of the season – they had no protection. I can’t believe that Foden, who was absolutely brilliant playing on the left wing or the right wing, played in the center midfield!
“Pep Guardiola’s arrogance at half-time not to raise his hands and say: ‘I’m wrong, we are still in the game, I have to bring in Fernandinho now and fix the problem.”
“He waited until the 64th minute to change it, then they took control, but you can’t break this Chelsea side in half an hour. You need a longer period. It was too little, too late.
“Pep Guardiola should go into that dressing room and apologize to every player because he is the one who cost them the Champions League.”
Asked about his selection, Guardiola said: “I made what I thought was the best decision.”
