SpaceX’s live stream on Sunday showed the Ax-2 mission, which includes a commercial crew of four, launched at 5:37 p.m. Eastern time (2137 GMT Sunday) from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. “Falcon 9’s first stage booster landed on Landing Zone 1, a first for a manned spaceflight mission,” SpaceX posted on Twitter shortly after the Ax-2 mission launched. Previously, after manned missions, the first stage only landed on floating platforms in the Atlantic Ocean. The Crew Dragon spacecraft separated from the Falcon 9 second stage about 12 minutes after liftoff and is expected to reach the International Space Station (ISS) at 1:24 p.m. GMT on Monday. This is the second time Houston-based Axiom Space has sent a commercial crew to the International Space Station (ISS). The AX-2 crew includes retired NASA astronaut commander Peggy Whitson, American pilot John Shoffner, Saudi fighter pilot Ali Alqarni and research technician Rayyanah Barnawi, who will become the first Saudi woman in space. They will take part in the scientific work of the ISS with the station’s regular crew. Axiom Space’s first crewed mission (Ax-1) was completed in April 2022.
