Alex Murdaugh, the South Carolina lawyer who survived a roadside shooting months after his wife and son died, is under investigation into allegations he is in pain managed the funds of his former law firm.
The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division on Monday announced it was investigating charges that Murdaugh had “embezzled” money from the law firm Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth and Detrick. Murdaugh, 53, said in a statement last week that he quit to go into rehab and “made a lot of decisions that I really regret.”
The family business exposed the allegations against Murdaugh earlier this month and said a forensic accountant would conduct an internal investigation. Murdaugh’s license was suspended indefinitely within two days of the announcement.
It is still unclear how much Murdaugh is accused of taking from the company and how he was used.
SC Law Enforcement Division Chief Mark Keel called for patience as the investigation unfolds.
“The investigative decisions we make throughout this case and any potentially related matter must ultimately withstand the scrutiny of the criminal justice process,” Keel said on Monday. “As in all cases, SLED is committed to conducting a professional, thorough and impartial criminal investigation, no matter where the facts lead us. “
Murdaugh became the subject of intrigue in June following the murders of his wife, Margaret, and his son, Paul. He found their bodies lying on the ground near the family kennels, according to his 911 call. They had been shot several times.
The double homicide was not resolved and is being investigated by the state’s Law Enforcement Division.
Legal authorities have given no indication that the shootings of Margaret, 52, and Paul, 22, are directly linked to that of Alex Murdaugh,
Paul Murdaugh was due to stand trial on three counts relating to the 2019 death of Mallory Beach, 19, in a boating accident. Authorities say he was intoxicated while driving a boat when it crashed, sending Beach overboard. His body was found a week later.
On September 4, Murdaugh reported that he was the subject of a roadside shooting. He told 911 he was shot while changing a flat tire in rural Hampton County. Murdaugh was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia, for treatment of a “superficial” head injury.
