Rassie Erasmus defeated Warren Gatland’s Wales in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals on their way to lead the Springboks to the title

Rassie Erasmus believes his former rival Warren Gatland is preparing some tactical surprises for the British and Irish Lions’ tour of South Africa.

Erasmus trained against Gatland Wales three times, losing the top two before securing a 19-16 victory in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals, with the Springboks crowned world champions.

The need to physically compete with South Africa while providing an attacking edge has shaped Gatland’s squad selection, but Erasmus suspects the New Zealander is also preparing an ambush for the Test Series.

“We’re not friends. I’m not going to barbecue with him when I see him, but he’s a guy who I think always has good intentions of coaching,” said the SA rugby manager. Rugby, Erasmus.

“There’s never a weird, funny feeling after a game – lose or win. I enjoy it as a person and I think we have a very similar mindset in terms of training and that’s why it’s always such a strange struggle when we play.

“The way Warren chose his Lions team, his bottom line, his support staff and assistant coaches with Gregor Townsend there, I think he’s got something up his sleeve.

“I don’t think we’ll see the battle of wear and tear and wrestling like in the World Cup. I think he has other plans.

“I think we’ll see a change in his game plan, but he might just throw bait at us, I’m not sure.

“Ending with two Highveld games and the loose forwards he chose, I think he has some plans.”
