Snow hits Europe: London turns white as Eastern Europe battles blizzards

A blanket of snow has fallen across London and other parts of the UK, causing significant travel disruption across the country. The harsh weather conditions fall on the same day as the National Rail strike which was already expected to cripple the country. Only 20% of UK rail services will be in operation.

British braces for more snow disturbance

More snow is expected across the UK on Tuesday evening and Wednesday, with the Met Office applying a yellow weather warning. Despite the disruption, Londoners braved the cold to stage snowball fights and build snowmen.

Flight delays in Latvia

In a country more used to heavy snowfall, blizzards unsurprisingly caused expected flight delays at Riga airport. Snow in some parts of the country is reported to be 19 to 20 cm thick.

Road travel has also been affected. Due to poor driving conditions, free “blizzard tickets” for motorists were introduced on public transport in Riga on Monday and Tuesday.

Estonians were also battling wintry conditions where blizzards caused power cuts to more than 4,000 homes in the south of the country.

Snow continues in Ukraine

Bad weather has plagued Ukraine for more than two weeks now. Snow fell again in the capital kyiv, where workers rushed to clear the streets of heavy snow.

Russian strikes on the country’s energy infrastructure add urgency to their work with the inevitable blackouts that follow targeted attacks, leaving many fights even harder to keep warm.
