Several people have been injured in a shootout at a South Carolina mall, police said.
The Columbia Police Department said those injured at Columbiana Center in the incident are receiving medical attention, but the extent of the injuries is currently unknown.
“Officers evacuated the mall and got people to safety,” they said in a statement.
Police said earlier they were responding to “shots fired” at the center, located about 10 miles northwest of the state capital, around 2:30 p.m. local time.
They wrote on Twitter: “We have confirmed that people were injured in the incident, they are receiving medical attention.” The extent of injuries [are] unknown at this time.”
The Columbia Police Department then informed people, “If you need to pick up loved ones, the assembly area is 320 Columbiana Drive – Fairfield Inn.
“We are working on a transit option to get people who may still be near the mall to the reunification zone.”
They then added that “law enforcement teams have strategically ensured that the Columbiana Center has been cleared.”
Police added on Twitter: “No further reports of injuries.”
