Emmanuel Macron “let Boris Johnson know” in a telephone interview “that he expected the British to cooperate fully and refrain from instrumentalizing a dramatic situation for political ends” after the death on Wednesday of 27 migrants in the Channel, said the Elysee on Thursday.

“The President of the Republic insisted on the need to act with dignity, respect and in a spirit of effective cooperation when it comes to human lives”, added the French presidency, specifying that “the ministers of French and British interior will meet on Thursday on this subject ”.

Boris Johnson said Wednesday evening on Sky News that efforts to deal with the migration crisis had not been “sufficient”, saying that he “had difficulty persuading some of (his) partners, in particular the French, to act in the height of the situation ”.
