It’s not uncommon for defenders’ efforts to go unnoticed, with goalscorers usually receiving all the adulation and accolades.
But when it comes to the England women’s team this summer, their back four have been getting a lot of love – and England’s most capped player believes one of them is the Lionesses player of the tournament .

Williams believes Chelsea defender Millie Bright was key to England’s success
Speaking on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan programme, former Lioness Fara Williams – who won 172 caps for the National – paid tribute to Bright ahead of England’s clash with Germany at Wembley, England live on talkSPORT.
When asked who she thinks was the best player for the Lionesses in this tournament, she replied: “You know what, it’s Millie Bright for me.
“It’s crazy to say a centre-half but I think without her performance in the times we talked about England shaking, I think without her at the back in those times the games could have be completely different.
“She was amazing and took her own game to a new level. She is the key to this team.
Williams then paid tribute to Bright’s Chelsea team-mate Fran Kirby for her contribution to the Lionesses’ attacking efforts.
But while she is full of praise for the WSL stars, Williams also warned that the Germans have their own brilliant players, particularly in defence.

The former Williams midfielder saw his former team-mate Bright flourish
It’s no surprise the former midfielder is backing his former side to go all the way, but she was balanced on England’s chances, citing Germany’s defensive abilities as a big cause for concern .
“It’s going to be difficult,” she said, “The Germans are very good and the team drilled and disciplined, they just have know-how.
“They are eight times European champions and you can’t do that without being good and having a good structure and the foundations that have been built in the German national team for many years.
“They are definitely going to be tough to beat. They only conceded one goal in the tournament, so did we.”
