“Shakira and her team consider this matter to be a complete violation of her rights,” the statement said, “because she has always demonstrated impeccable behavior, as a person and a taxpayer, and a total will to resolve any disagreement from the beginning, even before the criminal proceedings.”
In July 2021, a judge in a court near Barcelona ruled the Colombian singer could stand trial for alleged tax evasion of 14.5 million euros ($17 million) in Spain.
In a ruling obtained by CNN, the magistrate said there was “enough evidence” to hold a trial for Shakira’s alleged tax evasion for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Judge Marco Jesús Juberías argued that Shakira had lived more than 200 days in Spain in each of those three years, which required her to pay taxes in the country.
The judge argued that Shakira and a financial adviser, also named in the ruling, used a series of companies in offshore tax havens to try to hide the sources of her income during those years.
CNN has contacted the prosecutor’s office for comment, but there has been no response yet.
