BUENOS AIRES (Sputnik) – Seven people have been arrested in Peru during mass protests across the country following the ousting of former President Pedro Castillo, Peruvian media reported, quoting the Interior Minister Caesar Cervantes.

More than 24,400 people are taking part in the protests nationwide, the minister said, quoted in the report released on Monday evening.

Castillo, who was impeached by parliament and arrested last week, issued a letter on Monday saying he refused to step down. Separately, the former president urged Peruvians to reject the snap election scheduled for 2024. On Sunday, protests took place in the Peruvian capital Lima, as well as in Apurimac, Cajamarca, Arequipa, Lambayeque and Ica.
