The Italian GP at Monza in September was officially named as the second venue for the F1 Sprint Weekend experience.

As expected, the next edition of the F1 test format will take place at the circuit dubbed the “Temple of Speed” when F1 visits Italy for the second time this season from September 10-12.

The weekend format will be the same one that debuted at last week’s British GP, with qualifying on Friday night before the 100km sprint on Saturday afternoon. The Monza weekend will end with the usual 53-lap Grand Prix on Sunday.

A third and final sprint weekend for 2021 is set for one of the final flying rounds of the season.

Designed to increase value for fans and create more unpredictability for certain events, the format could be rolled out to more events in 2022 if the three-race trial in 2021 is considered successful.

F1 Motorsport General Manager Ross Brawn said Sky Sports F1 After the short-form sprint race debut last Saturday, he had been delighted to see a “pure race”, with no pit stops or tire strategy involved in 17 laps and 25 minutes of racing at Silverstone.

“No big things but a lot of things we need to take away from this weekend and think over time and see if we can refine them,” he said.

“But I’m really happy with the overall concept.”

What did the drivers say about F1 Sprint?

Lewis Hamilton: “I think it was great to try something new if I’m really being honest. I don’t think the race was particularly exciting after the first lap for me. We should just have a long Saturday and a long Sunday. . P1, P2, qualifying on Saturday, then a sprint race and a race on Sunday. Pack it all! “

Daniel Ricciardo: “My favorite day of the race week is Sunday and that’s because it’s a race. I love the start, the intensity of it all and the wheel-to-wheel racing. With this format we can sort of doing this twice a weekend so for me it’s a win. I like it. “

Max Verstappen: “It was different. I liked driving on less fuel in a racing setting because the car takes more life and it’s a lot better to drive. It’s just a little weird to hear that you have got pole position because you run and then you have pole position. Maybe we have to get used to it, I don’t know, but maybe that was the weird thing about it. “

Sebastian vettel: “I enjoyed this unusual weekend format so far. It was interesting to have the intense moment last night followed by the Sprint today, which can go both ways.”

Fernando Alonso: “I liked it because we had three days of action. Normally the free practice is very useful for the teams and the drivers but not for the spectators because they only see the cars go by. [the track]. Yesterday they had qualifying, today they had this race and tomorrow they have the main race. So it’s a good format. “
