Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez could fight in Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight division, Eddie Hearn says

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is looking to become a five-weight champion when he takes on WBC cruiserweight champion IIunga Makabu.

The Mexican is already the undisputed king at 168 pounds after defeating Caleb Plant and he also intends to tackle the cruiserweight division.

Makabu is now WBC cruiserweight champion and Canelo Alvarez wants to take his belt

Matchroom Boxing mainstay Eddie Hearn believes Canelo could end up going heavyweight if the pound-for-pound superstar is given the right challenge.

Speaking to iFL TV, he said: “I think with Canelo and Eddie Reynoso they want challenges. They want to dare to be big, which is great for the sport.

“Makabu’s fight is a cruiserweight fight that would give him another world championship win, get a lot of people talking like last night, and I think it’s a good option for him.

“I think it’s a dangerous fight. I was talking to Tony Bellew – who could be very good looking in a few months if that happens – and he said that Makabu is a huge puncher, a huge puncher and very strong.

Tony Bellew is one of only two men to defeat Makabu

“I think when you watch Saul the fight against Golovkin is a huge fight financially, a lot of people would like to see this fight. But does that motivate him?

“I think he could go unchallenged at 175 and I like this shot. But there is also the cruiserweight division.

“Look, he could ride and fight in heavyweight. I mean, Usyk is not a huge heavyweight, Trevor Bryant is also a world champion. Can he compete with these guys?

“Cruiser weight first, maybe. But I like the fight against Makabu. I think it’s a dangerous fight, I think it’s an exciting fight and like I said Saul and Eddy are interested in making history.

Canelo is the undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO super middleweight world champion, but he wants more

“They’re not interested in having normal, boring fights. Every fight has to mean something.

Alvarez is only 31 years old but has already racked up a career record of 57-1-2 thanks to his professional turn at 15.

It’s hard to imagine the pound-for-pound star tackling Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in the heavyweight ranks given the physical differences, but Hearn isn’t far off when he says someone like Usyk as that an opponent would not be totally scandalous.

Canelo is set to challenge Makabu in the spring of 2022 and the Mexican is set to go from 168 pounds to 200 pounds.
