Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez could be doomed to face winner Evgeny Shvedenko against Vladimir Shishkin if the Mexican star adds the IBF belt to his WBC, WBO and WBA belts.
Canelo aims to become Mexico’s first undisputed super middleweight world champion, with a bout against IBF champion Caleb Plant set to be scheduled for September.
But and the IBF eliminator between Shvedenko and Shishkin, two undefeated Russians, is also expected to take place after promoter Dmitriy Salita wins the scholarship offer and the winner will become the mandatory challenger for the IBF belt.
“I said it for a long time, the guy who beat Canelo is Vladimir Shishkin,” Salita said. Air sports.
“Not only is he one of the most talented guys in the division, he’s also coached by Sugarhill Stewart who is a master coach.
“His fight with Shvedenko is important and he is currently in camp with Tyson Fury and Sugarhill getting ready.”
Shvedenko holds a perfect record of 15 fights, with six knockout wins, while Shishkin is also undefeated in 12 fights with seven wins by stoppage.
Canelo filled a mandatory WBC title defense against Avni Yildirim in February, stopping the Turkish challenger in the third round, then stopping Billy Joe Saunders in May to claim the WBO belt.
