Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag +, the company’s competitor to Apple’s upcoming lost property finder known as AirTags, has now arrived. Samsung first announced its competitor Tile known as Galaxy SmartTag, a Bluetooth locator, at its press conference in January. At the time, he teased that an ultra-wideband (UWB) powered version called Galaxy SmartTag + would arrive a little later in the year, without giving a specific time frame.
Now it’s here. The newly launched iteration will offer support for both Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and UWB, and can be attached to everyday items you want to track, like backpacks or key chains, through example.
Like Apple’s supposed (and accidentally confirmed) AirTags, the SmartTag + for Samsung device owners offers more precise search capabilities due to its use of UWB technology, which the recently launched Galaxy SmartTag does not include. .
When items go missing, SmartTag + users will be able to use AR technology to more easily locate beacons using their Samsung phone, due to its spatial detection capabilities. As you get closer to where the tag is located, you can also choose to ring it loudly – which can help if it falls under something, like a sofa cushion.
Like Tile’s UWB device, SmartTag + also supports a sort of community search feature where any nearby Galaxy device enabled can help locate lost items and notify their owners through the SmartThings Find network. Samsung says this data is encrypted, so the location of the beacon is only known to its owner.
But unlike the old SmartTag, which has expanded to include pink and green tags, the SmartTag + is only available in black and gray at launch.
Since the new tags are based on UWB, Samsung says they will only work with Galaxy devices with UWB technology, including the Galaxy Note20 Ultra, Galaxy S21 +, Galaxy S21 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Fold2.
The arrival of SmartTag + comes at a time when the lost object tag market is about to change.
Apple’s plans to enter this space, where companies like Tile now dominate, could be quite disruptive. Apple AirTags will leverage UWB to capture spatial and directional data, which will make finding lost objects with beacons attached easier and more accurate. But AirTags will also integrate with Apple’s Find My app, which has now opened up to third-party manufacturers starting this week, including earphone and e-bike makers, among others.
Tile, which also has its own UWB tracker on its way, is particularly absent from this first range. Tile doesn’t want to abandon the customer relationship he has already established through his own app and cede it to Apple instead, we understand. Instead, it plans to offer its own UWB tracker and its own AR search capabilities through its own iOS app.
Samsung, however, doesn’t have this problem because its proprietary trackers are designed for its own devices. This SmartTag + is essentially the AirTag for Samsung owners, and if and when Apple launches its own beacons, demand for the Android version might be affected.
The company will start selling the new SmartTag + on April 16.
