Samoa Joe has announced that he has quit the NXT title.
The 42-year-old had just returned to action after an 18-month hiatus with concussion issues, but he now finds himself on the shelf again.
The only game Joe has had since returning was the NXT title match against Karrion Kross at TakeOver 36 where he won the belt.
WWE announced, “NXT Champion Samoa Joe revealed on Twitter Sunday night that he was injured and is unable to compete at the moment. As a result, he abandons the NXT Championship.

Of course, NXT is entering a new phase this week. The logo has been renamed and the show is expected to have a totally different feel on Tuesday.
The rebranding was Vince McMahon’s idea and it looks like NXT 2.0 – as the ads have called it – will have a new champion for its new era.
Joe posted a video on social media explaining his reasons for dropping the title.
“Hello, I’m the NXT Champion Samoa Joe. On my recent comeback my goals were pretty straightforward. I sought to ensure the respect and integrity owed to both NXT and its Championship. set out to make sure everyone understands that an individual’s needs will never exceed the sum of the brand, and today I find myself having to stick to these principles.
“Recently WWE medics informed me that due to some injuries they would be looking to take me out of the ring for a brief, but still undetermined period. I realize this week that we are on the cusp of a new NXT. We are on the verge of a new era in our history and I realize that this era deserves a fighting champion.
“That’s why it makes this decision very difficult to make. With immediate effect, I renounce the NXT Championship. Good luck to those who argue. My sincere condolences to whoever wins because I will soon be here to take back what is mine, ”said Joe.
It’s a blow to fans who have relished Joe’s long-awaited return. Joe will continue to work as a WWE scout, but has said he expects to return to the ring. The injury at this time is not disclosed.
