Code name ? “Angela”. This first name, soon displayed on yellow stickers in the windows of some sixty bars, cultural places and shops in Brioche, will signal to everyone the presence of a benevolent listening space for victims of street harassment. The initiative was born during a brainstorming between several actors of the Briochine nightlife: Art Rock, Bonjour Minuit, Le Bistrot de la Poste, 1701, le Fût chantant and Carnavalorock. “Problems often arise when leaving our establishments and festivals,” recalls Carole Meyer, director of Art Rock. Inspired by Fabien from Bistrot de la Poste, the idea was born to imitate an existing device in Great Britain.

A first in Brittany

Already experienced in Rouen and Nîmes, the organization of such a network of shelters is a first in Brittany. The effectiveness of the “Angela” device has not yet been able to be measured precisely but “the feedback is positive”, underlines Mathilde Mur-Baquer, administrator and project manager for “gender equality” at Art Rock. Solicited, the City mobilized its communication department to ensure the visibility of the operation.

The elected Renée Mazéo, delegate for women’s rights and long-time activist of the Information Center on the Rights of Women and Families (CIDFF 22) hails “a great job”. “Public security is everyone’s business,” adds François Portzer, adviser to public tranquility, who is considering raising high school students’ awareness of the device.

Already 64 businesses involved

The initiative has generated widespread support: 64 businesses have already volunteered to be part of the network. Their employees will receive training in early September to adopt the right attitude to a victim. “It will serve us for life,” comments Fabien, from the Bistrot de la Poste.
