Russia says it destroyed Ukrainian drones in Moscow region, nearly 50 flights disrupted

Russia said it thwarted attacks by two Ukrainian drones in the Moscow region on Monday, but nearly 50 aircraft flights to and from the capital were halted.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it blocked a Ukrainian drone in the Ruzsky district, west of the capital, then destroyed another in the nearby Istrinsky district.

Arrivals and departures from Moscow’s four main airports – Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky – were restricted, disrupting 45 passenger planes and two cargo planes, Russia’s aviation authority Rosaviatsia said.

Russia said it blocked a Ukrainian drone in the Ruzsky district west of the capital on Monday morning.

Russian officials have repeatedly warned that military drones flying over Moscow – which, together with its surrounding region, has a population of nearly 22 million people – could cause a major disaster.

Drone airstrikes deep in Russia have increased since two drones were shot down over the Kremlin in early May.

Drone strikes on the Russian capital have become increasingly common in recent months.

It is unclear what impact the drone attacks will have on perceptions of the war among the Russian population.

Polls indicate that support for the Russian military operation in Ukraine remains high, around 75%, although there are questions about the accuracy of polls in Russia.

Ukraine does not usually comment on who is behind attacks on Russian territory, although officials have publicly expressed satisfaction with them.
