Route du Rhum: Buekenhout: “In 3 seconds, the boat was vertical, I fell 10 meters into the water…” – Route du Rhum

The freighter, which picked him up, agreed to drop him off in Guadeloupe where the solo sailor was then picked up by the local SNSM star. On the MémorialActe pontoon, where he should have moored his trimaran Jess as the big winner of the Rhum Multi category, the Belgian based in Pornichet agreed to come back to this capsize, to the rescue operation. He disembarked with a plastic bag in which he kept his TPS suit and the outfit offered by the cargo crew.

On the pontoon, Gilles Buekenhout was welcomed by his family and by Francis Le Goff, race director: “Gilles, we would all have preferred to see you arrive here with your boat”.

“I’m here and happy to be here: I don’t have the icing but I have the cake”, said the solo sailor who admits not having understood why he had capsized so quickly: “There was a squall, I put myself at the helm and there, in 3 seconds, the boat was vertical, lifted by the back of the boat. I saw the precipice in front of me and in 2 seconds I hit the mainsail car which went to the right. I understood that it was screwed, the boat was too far. It took a while to fall forward. Me, as I no longer had support, I fell into the water 10 meters from the water, flat, the boat vertically falling on me. With my fall I sank into the water 1.50 meters. The boat fell and when I came out of the water, the boat was flat, upside down of course, and then I got back on it”.
