Rory McIlroy hits back at questions about DP World Championship collapse: “That ripped shirt”

Rory McIlroy was unhappy with reporters on Wednesday after several urged him to have an explosive time at the DP World Championship last month when he ripped his shirt after a catastrophic end.

At a press conference for the Hero World Challenge charity golf event, the very first comment McIlroy was struck with was the condition of his attire.

“Nice shirt, it’s in one piece,” the reporter said via Golf Digest, but McIlroy hit back.

“It is. Another joke you tried to make that isn’t funny.”

McIlroy, 32, entered the final round of the European Tour final with a one-stroke lead but after three bogeys in his last four holes he shot a 74 – tied for sixth place.

It was then that, while in the process of signing his official scoreboard, McIlroy was pictured with a badly torn shirt on.

Another reporter insisted further on Wednesday, asking how long it took to rip the shirt.

“I mean, I pulled on my collar and it ripped. I don’t know if I’ve done this before,” he said.

McIlroy answered more questions, but a brave soul decided to give it a try for the third time.

“I went to the pro’s store, bought a new one, threw it in the trash. I mean, that fucking ripped shirt, my God,” the unamused golfer replied.

McIlroy will compete in the Hero Challenge at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas for the first time since 2013.
