Romelu Lukaku ‘lost confidence in his game’ after missing golden chance in Chelsea loss as Thomas Tuchel fears the Blues will be ‘hammered’ in second leg against Real Madrid

Romelu Lukaku looks like a player who ‘lost confidence in his game’ after missing a golden chance to score a goal for Chelsea in their 3-1 loss to Real Madrid.

The Belgian, who the Blues spent a club record on in the summer, missed a great chance to pull a goal back for the west Londoners in the 69th minute.

And he couldn’t believe he put it off

Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross was deflected towards Lukaku who was standing, unmarked, just outside the penalty area but headed in from close range.

It would have been a goal that would have reduced the deficit by two goals and put Chelsea in a much better position heading into the Bernabeu on April 12.

And, after the miss, former Blues striker Tony Cascarino feels the centre-forward lacks a lot of confidence.

Cascarino told talkSPORT: “I really don’t know what Romelu Lukaku is right now.

“I’m looking at a player who has totally lost confidence in his game.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was unhappy with his side’s overall performance, saying they would be ‘hammered’ if they played like this in the second leg.

Benzema was simply unstoppable in West London

“We have to go to Southampton and I think it’s very, very important to deal with that first. Absolutely crucial,” Tuchel told BT Sport after the defeat.

“I’m going to make sure everyone deals with this because it’s absolutely the most important thing right now, because if we keep playing like this we’ll lose to Southampton.

“And then we don’t need to think about the Bernabeu, we’ll get hammered at the Bernabeu.”

Ex-Chelsea player Jason Cundy has been disappointed with his former players’ defensive display against Real, calling it ‘disastrous class’.

Karim Benzema scored a terrific hat-trick at Stamford Bridge – and Cundy says he was relieved the Spanish side didn’t score more.

“It was a disaster, a class of disaster,” Cundy told talkSPORT. “I can’t say it any other way.

“At halftime, I was relieved that it was 2-1. I felt happy at 2-1.

“I can only imagine that Carlo Ancelotti coming in at half-time would have been a bit irritated that Chelsea were back because, really, it should have been 3-1.”

He added: “Going forward, I actually thought we looked half decent. But defensively…I thought we were bad this weekend, and I know Real are a better team than Brentford. , but my God.
