Reviews | Sloppy Joe – POLITICO

Some say it’s to Biden’s credit that he cooperated with investigators, unlike Donald Trump, who has repeatedly insisted he declassified improperly kept documents at his residence, that they belong and that the documents have been concealed by the FBI. (I’m still waiting for him to say he can found Mar-a-Lago with the documents if he wants.) But why cover Biden because he admits he’s wrong and helps the cops instead of fighting them? Biden’s alleged violations represent extremes neglect. At least Trump is candid about his mishandling of documents. He never thought the rules of secrecy applied to him, which is why he routinely leaked sensitive information when he was president. No one thinks Biden, who knows better, intentionally got away with the documents. He just ignored the rules like a reckless driver.

Wasn’t it supposed to be different? Wasn’t the Biden presidency supposed to mark the return of adults and professionalism to the White House? Weren’t Biden’s hallmarks his pedigree and experience, skill and diligence? Or, setting his shortcomings aside for a moment, wasn’t Biden supposed to have surrounded himself with a capable team of advisers who have been with him for decades, some dating back to his days in Delaware politics, to guide and protect it? What were they doing to protect Biden when the all-important classified documents bled into his think tank office, garage, and home, and stored away for years? Or are they as sloppy as Biden and carrying exaggerated reputations?

You could attribute Biden’s paperwork failures to his age. He is now 80, after all. But that excuse doesn’t seal his self-inflected wound. Negligence has been Biden’s signature since practicing politics. During his political career, Biden has gaffed the way Mount Etna erupts — in steady, hot, gassy burps. In 1987, while running for president, he recklessly pinched large parts of a British politician’s speech and called it his own. Last March, in a seemingly off-the-cuff statement that appeared to challenge Russia to start World War III, Biden said Vladimir Putin “cannot stay in power,” sounding like a direct call for regime change. The White House immediately backtracked on its statement, as it often does, saying, “The president’s point was that Putin cannot be allowed to wield power over his neighbors or the region. He wasn’t talking about Putin’s power in Russia or regime change. Of course. Like this recent New York Post piece tracing Biden’s presidential blunders, it grew hotter and gassier, indicating an inability to edit or discipline himself.

To put it in the vernacular, it is very sloppy.

The White House clean-up team following Biden 24/7 to undo his gaffes will likely save him from his all-important classified document disaster. When the Biden documentation discoveries began, experts speculated that they were an unintended gift to Trump: Even if the two cases are not directly comparable, it would be wrong to punish Trump for running away with documents, but not Biden (who cannot be charged under Justice Department rules anyway). But as classified documents pile up on Biden’s doorstep – who knows where they’ll find them next, his Rehoboth beach mat? – Trump’s document issues now look like a gift to Biden. What Biden did was wrong, his supporters will say, but he didn’t deliberately take it, like Trump. What is the problem ? He was always a sloppy Joe, that logic goes, he will always be a sloppy Joe. What were you waiting for?
