How did this meeting at the Élysée go?
President Emmanuel Macron wished to thank the people engaged against the fires, many this summer in France. A total of 350 speakers were invited. We received the boxes a few days before. On the spot, we joined the Finistère delegation composed, among others, of the prefect of the department, the president of Sdis 29, the on-call commander on July 18 [date du début des incendies, NDLR]the head of the Brasparts rescue center, the patron saint of the department’s gendarmerie… Representing all the people involved this summer was a necessity.
Emmanuel Macron announced new firefighting tools (new Canadair, financial resources, planted trees, etc.) What do you think?
It allows us to have a clearer idea of the government’s action plan. From now on, the fight against fires is envisaged according to the specificities of the regions. Very precise censuses will be undertaken. In the Monts d’Arrée for example, between rocks, moors and peat bogs, the terrain is often inaccessible: the rescuers have to wait for the fire to reach a road to start attacking it. The increase in air resources is good news. It would be ideal, given the specificities of the mountains, if an aircraft or a Canadair could be based in the region. The arrival of the Finistère firefighters training center in Saint-Ségal will reinforce this dynamic.
What do you recommend for the Monts d’Arrée?
A steering committee has been set up. Three meetings have already been organised. A balance between the protection of nature, the wishes of the breeders, tourism and the fight against fires must be found. The additional resources announced reinforce the ongoing restoration. In addition, a pooling of knowledge between the various stakeholders will have to be put in place. The majority of firefighters are volunteers, what will be the compensation for the companies that employ them? And for the highly invested agricultural world? Specifically concerning the municipality of Commana, a safeguard plan is now under study.
