real Madrid failed with a bid of € 200million (£ 171.7million) for Paris Saint Germainof Kylian Mbappé but landed another exciting young French international in Eduardo Camavinga.

Camavinga, an 18-year-old midfielder, joined Rennes on a six-year contract for € 31m, with up to € 9m to come as a supplement. But Madrid were forced to accept defeat in their pursuit of Mbappé – at least for now – when PSG refused to respond to their latest offer.

Madrid’s offer would have guaranteed PSG 200 million euros, a small profit on the 180 million euros it cost him to leave Monaco, at a time when Mbappé has less than a year on his contract.

French club president Nasser a-Khelaifi was determined to stay the course and turned down Madrid’s € 160m and € 170m offers last week. PSG sporting director Leonardo has admitted the player is hoping to leave and Mbappé has the option of signing a pre-contract deal with another club in January.

Camavinga, born in a refugee camp in Angola to Congolese parents, last year became the youngest player to represent France since 1917 at 17 years, nine months and 29 days. He rose through the ranks at Rennes and made his Ligue 1 debut at 16.

Tottenham completed the signing of right-back Emerson Royal from Barcelona on a five-year contract for 25 million euros. The 22-year-old has spent the last two seasons with Real Betis and played for Brazil in the Copa América this summer.

Barcelona also sold midfielder Ilaix Moriba to RB Leipzig for an initial amount of 16 million euros, and up to 6 million euros will follow. Moriba, an 18-year-old Barcelona academy graduate, broke into the first team late last season but talks to extend his contract, which expires in June, have stalled.

Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have agreed to pay cuts to register new signing Sergio Agüero under financial fair play rules. Defender Gerard Pique had previously taken a similar step that saw Memphis Depay, Eric García and Rey Manaj enter La Liga.

“Sergio and Jordi Alba have agreed to change the financial terms of their contracts, including a pay cut for this season and postponement of payments for the remaining years,” Barcelona said.
