RB Salzburg 1-2 Chelsea: Stunner Kai Havertz secures Champions League Round of 16 progress in Austrian thriller

Graham Potter’s side, showing four changes from their last draw with Manchester United, were dominant in Austria at first, leading the interval thanks to Mateo Kovacic’s superb first strike and turning none away a second by a series of excellent saves by the goalkeeper at home. Philip Kohn.

However, despite their often sumptuous first-half performance which offered a possible blueprint for the future under Potter, Chelsea had to work very hard during an exciting second half which saw chances galore at both ends.

As things stand, the Blues have sealed progress in Europe’s elite club competition with another terrific finish, this time Kai Havertz bringing home a beauty after Christian Pulisic’s good work with a bit more than 25 minutes to do.

Such a result will be enough for Chelsea to top Group E with one game to spare if Dinamo Zagreb fail to beat Serie A champions AC Milan in Croatia later on Tuesday night.

It was quite a turnaround under Potter, whose side were bottom when he took over after the defeat in Zagreb, followed by a frustrating draw with Salzburg in his first game in charge.

Chelsea remain unbeaten in nine matches in all competitions under their new manager, beating Salzburg’s formidable 40-match unbeaten streak at home.
