Rap giant Kendrick Lamar takes ‘Big Steppers’ to the Xcel Center in August

Hip-hop’s most consistently stellar rapper of the past decade and a half, Kendrick Lamar, is finally returning to the Twin Cities for just the third time in 15 years.

The Los Angeles emcee has confirmed an Aug. 20 date at Xcel Energy Center on his recently announced Big Steppers Tour, tied to his widely acclaimed latest album released on Friday, “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.” One of the collaborators on the new record, Baby Keem, opens with Tanna Leone.

Tickets for the St. Paul concert — which falls on a Saturday night — go on sale next Friday (May 20) at noon via Ticketmaster, with pre-sale options starting Thursday. Prices have not been made public. His date at X falls a month after the start of the tour, which begins July 19 in Oklahoma City.

The youngest of the LA-area rap heroes to appear on the Dr. Dre-led Super Bowl halftime show in February at 34, Lamar has already sold out the Xcel Center on tour behind his ” DAMN”. album in 2017. His only previous appearances in town before that were at Epic nightclub and the Soundset festival in 2012.

“Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers” arrived Friday with just a few weeks notice and with plenty of cool guest stars, including Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, Summer Walker, Ghostface Killah and Thundercat.
