Two children died and six were injured after a city bus crashed into a daycare center in Laval, Quebec.
The 51-year-old man who was behind the wheel was arrested for homicide and dangerous driving, according to CBC.
He worked for the Société de transport de Laval (STL).
The bus hit the daycare center around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning in the Sainte-Rose sector, Laval police said.
A local resident who saw the crash said he and a number of relatives overpowered the driver, who allegedly acted erratically.
They also attempted to rescue children trapped under the bus.
According to Urgences-santé, no less than 12 people required medical attention, and eight others were hospitalized.
Sainte-Justine Hospital, a pediatric facility, told Radio Canada that they were doing “everything possible to treat patients, but also to support families in this tragic situation”.
Local resident Hamdi Ben Chaabane witnessed the incident, telling CBC that the bus appeared to be traveling between 30 and 40 km/h at the time of the crash.
“From what I saw, it wasn’t an accident,” he said.

The bus driver, a 51-year-old man, was arrested and charged with homicide and dangerous driving.
According to a Laval police spokesperson, the Société de transport de Laval bus entered the daycare at around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The spokesman said two children were confirmed dead and six others were injured and hospitalized but are expected to survive.
