A victim of a hit-and-run, Declan the Shih Tzu had a traumatic start to life, and despite life-altering injuries, he has recovered remarkably and is now living a happy life with his new owner.
The three-year-old dog lives in Miami, Florida, with his owner Shanna Proudfit, who adopted him after seeing his Instagram story.
“Honestly, I wasn’t looking for another dog when I came across Declan’s photo,” she said. Newsweek. “A friend of mine posted a call for donations for Paw Patrol Animal Rescue and Sanctuary. I headed to their Instagram page to find the donation link and that’s where I saw Declan.”
Declan was the victim of a hit and run, along with another dog, and lost a leg and an eye in the accident.
“He and another dog were left on the side of the road for hours,” Proudfit said. “A Good Samaritan who found them called rescue after rescue, and each turned them down until Paw Patrol got the call.”
After being hit by a car, Delcan was in poor condition: “He was bleeding profusely, emaciated, completely matted and infested with fleas,” the owner explained. “The rescue saved his life. He had to have his eye removed immediately and after months of rehabilitation his right front leg finally had to be amputated.”
When she heard his story, Proudfit was immediately touched: “I saw this sweet boy fighting for a better life. A super strong 10lb pup who hadn’t given up hope despite everything he had crossed,” she said. “Honestly, I cried reading his story. At that point, I just knew he had to come home with us.”
Declan now has over 1,800 followers on Instagram, where his owner shares his life and adventures.
“He has a huge following on Instagram and is proving to people all over the world that being different is okay and finding your perfect mate can absolutely be found in the rescue,” Proudfit said.
“Having one eye and three legs doesn’t slow him down at all,” his owner said. “He’s super brave, loves to play and run with his foster siblings and he’s just the nicest boy.”
Declan isn’t the only dog with a happy ending. Earlier this week, we learned that an elderly Chihuahua abandoned at a shelter had found a new forever home.
Separately, we saw that a dog injured in an acid attack had also found his perfect home and was enjoying life with his canine siblings.
The Shih Tzu even accompanies its owner to work on some days: “I work at a school for autistic children,” Proudfit says. “(He) showed that being different doesn’t make you less.”
Along with his canine siblings, the pup affectionately nicknamed “tripawd” enjoys going on adventures and road trips, and really enjoys playing with squeaky balls and eating treats.
“We’ve earned so much more than we ever could have imagined. We now have an incredible support system and an incredible community of animal-loving friends,” Proudfit said. “We love all the people and puppies we’ve been able to connect with through Instagram.”
