Protesters take control of Andahuaylas airport in Peru amid mass protests

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Protesters in the Peruvian city of Andahuaylas seized the airport and set fire to part of the terminals, the Peruvian Corporation of Commercial Airports and Aviation (CORPAC) said.

Mass protests are taking place across Peru with demonstrators demanding an immediate election and the resignation of new president Dina Boluarte.

On Sunday, demonstrators at the Andahuaylas airport “burned down the transmitter room, the fuel room, surrounding the terminal with acts of violence, where there were 50 members of the Peruvian National Police and employees of the business,” CORPAC said in a statement.

The airport was forced to suspend work for security reasons, CORPAC said.

Peru’s Congress dismissed President Pedro Castillo on Wednesday. Prime Minister Dina Boluarte was sworn in as the country’s new president within two hours of the impeachment vote, promising to serve the rest of Castillo’s term, until July 2026.

Castillo, who had tried to dissolve parliament ahead of the vote, was arrested after impeachment proceedings and the Peruvian prosecutor’s office filed criminal charges against him for attempted coup and crimes against the state.

Several corruption cases have been opened against Castillo, who argues that all charges against him are political persecution by the opposition.
