People gathered downtown, carrying coffins wrapped in the flags of countries where the United States has sent troops for the past 20 years. The demonstrators also held up banners which read: “Feed the people, not the Pentagon”, “Fund the needs of the people, not the war machine”, “Dissolve NATO”. Participants in the protest demand that the United States stop sending money and weapons to fuel the Ukrainian conflict, end “militarism and sanctions”, including those imposed against Syria, and avoid the escalation of relations with China, among others. Organizers said the protest was intended to warn people of the threat of a “world war”, while raising awareness of the “human and financial toll of American militarism at home and abroad”. The protest coincided with the 20th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq, organizers added. The United States has been Ukraine’s most active military supporter since Moscow’s military operation began in February 2022. With military equipment worth more than $50 billion, excluding other types of assistance worth tens of billions of dollars.
