Prince Harry tried at the eleventh hour to tone down parts of his forthcoming autobiography because he fears he will be vilified in the wake of the Queen’s death, according to reports.

The Duke of Sussex fears some of the revelations in his book ‘may not look so good’ following the public outpouring of support for the monarchy both at home and abroad, it is claimed.

The book, which is part of a three-title deal worth £36.8million, is due for publication this autumn, but the Duke is now said to fear it may be ill-timed as his father , the king, begins his reign.

He reportedly wanted to make “refinements” to the manuscript, which had already been approved by publishers Penguin Random House, although industry sources wondered if it might not be too late.

Having invested such a large amount of money in the Duke’s memoir, publishers will probably want the book to be as revealing as possible. The Duke had already been asked to revise the manuscript after it was deemed “too sensitive”, according to The Mail on Sunday, with too many mental health issues.

A separate report in The Sun on Sunday claimed editors found the first draft “disappointing” and “overly emotional”.

A source told the two newspapers that: ‘Harry has thrown a spanner into the works as he is desperate to refine it in light of the Queen’s death, her funeral and the rise to the throne of her father Charles .

“There may be things that might not look good if they come out so soon after the queen dies and her father becomes king.

“He wants the sections changed. This is by no means a total rewrite. He desperately wants to make changes. But it may be too late.

No release date for the book has yet been made public, although it is understood that publishers want it on shelves in the US before Thanksgiving on November 24 so that it reaches the all-important market of Christmas.

The Duke is said to have received an advance of £18.4million for the three books, which were ghost-penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning American author JR Moehringer.

Rather than watering down the memoir, it remains possible that the editors want the Duke to add details about what happened after the Queen’s death when there were obvious tensions between Prince Harry, his brother Prince William and the King about his own part in the events. before the funeral and that of the Duchess of Sussex.

It comes as new claims about the Duchess have been made in the book Brokers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown by royal writer Valentine Low.

He claims royal staff called Meghan a ‘narcissistic sociopath’ and aides called themselves the ‘Sussex Survivors Club’.

Another new book, The New Royals, by author Katie Nicholl, claims the late Queen was surprised when Meghan wore white on her wedding day, believing that as a divorcee she should have worn off-white .

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex declined to comment.
