Aston Villa’s big-under signing Emi Buendia impressed and provided two assists for Ollie Watkins as Villa beat Walsall 4-0 on Wednesday night.
The former Norwich playmaker, who joined Villa for £ 33million this summer, opened Walsall with sublime assists as Watkins found the net after 26 minutes, then 38 minutes.
Villa head coach Dean Smith missed the team’s friendly as he isolated himself, so assistant head coach Craig Shakespeare took matters into his own hands. He gave Ashley Young a first start since returning to Villa from Inter Milan while Buendia started on the right side of the attack.
Following Watkins’ brace, Villa added another in the second half when Wesley teamed up to slip Jaden Philogene-Bidace, who returned home with confidence. His compatriot Aaron Ramsey – brother of his compatriot Jacob – added a fourth with a powerful drive of 20 meters.
Elsewhere, Tottenham lost 3-0 to Colchester as they played host to Heung-Min Son again.
The South Korean scored one and played a role in the other two. He opened the scoring by finishing a quick attack on the left thanks to quick work from Lucas Moura. Son then became a supplier, whipping in a specific corner for Moura to return home. Dele Alli was on hand to make it 3-0 just before the break after another run and a formidable cross for the Englishman.
