Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to make an announcement Wednesday as the province launches its COVID-19 passport system.

Health Minister Christine Elliott and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones will join the Prime Minister in the announcement.

Ford and ministers are expected to provide an update on the vaccine deployment in Ontario, as well as an update on the launch of COVID-19 vaccination certificates.

Ontario’s new COVID-19 vaccination certificate system will now require patrons of dining venues, nightclubs, movie theaters, gyms, sports facilities and other venues to present a vaccination receipt complete as well as government ID.

Doctors’ notes for medical exemptions will also be accepted. Companies that do not comply with the checks required by the system and customers who give false information may be fined.

In Ontario, more than 85 percent of people aged 12 and older have at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine in the province, and about 79 percent of the general population has both doses.

CTVNewsToronto.ca will broadcast the announcement live this morning.
