The right-back has enjoyed two and a half seasons at Philips Stadion since joining a five-year contract in mid-2018 with Heerenveen, partly as a replacement for Atletico Madrid-bound Santiago Arias.
He subsequently earned a regular place in the international setup and is expected to be part of Frank de Boer’s squad during this year’s rearrangement. Euro 2020
The 24-year-old has previously been linked with Arsenal interest and Newcastle United, and has now opened up about his ambitions to test himself as he nears the prime of his career away from his home country.
Dumfries also conceded that he might have already left the Eredivisie without the Covid-19 pandemic, while saying he hopes to finish on a high with a national title.
“We are in talks and the intention, as it is, is to extend my contract,” said the defender. Voetbal International. “But a contract extension doesn’t automatically mean I’ll stay here longer.
“My interests are currently aligned with those of PSV of course – but I also have my own career. There are new things on the horizon [for me].
“[A departure] did not happen [due to the pandemic] and I am very happy at PSV. But I think that as a footballer and as a person, I am ready to take the next step abroad.
“The Premier League and the Bundesliga, they suit my game. I can watch the headlines again, but I think I can say it and I think everyone can see that I’m ready to move on.
“I played for four years at the highest level in the Netherlands and have played over a hundred matches for PSV. It will soon be time for the next stage [but] a title will be the icing on the cake. “
PSV are currently third in the Eredivisie table, a point adrift of the leaders Ajax have played 15 games.
