In a speech outside the White House ahead of the January 6 riots, Trump told his supporters they “will never take back our country with weakness.” His remarks led to calls for a second indictment, which the House is expected to vote on Wednesday, as well as possible criminal charges against the president.
Trump released a video statement last week in which he condemned the violence and pledged those who break the law will “pay,” but on Tuesday he defended his pre-riot comments as “very appropriate”.
The only other person to have double-digit support for a potential run in 2024 in the latest poll was Vice President Mike Pence, with 18% saying they would vote for him.
Of all respondents, 55% said Trump should step down from the presidency, with 54% approving the removal of Trump by the Senate in the event of a successful impeachment by the House.
The poll results also showed strong support for another stimulus package to combat the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic, with 84% in favor and 68% saying Congress should adopt another stimulus package immediately. .
The poll was conducted Jan. 8-11 among 1,996 registered voters, including 702 Republican and Republican-leaning independents. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 2 percentage points.
