politico – McConnell says he hasn’t ruled out condemning Trump in Senate trial

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told fellow Republicans on Wednesday that he had yet to decide the fate of President Donald Trump, ahead of a House vote to impeach the president later today.

“Although the press has been full of speculation, I have not made a final decision on how I will vote and intend to listen to the legal arguments when they are presented to the Senate,” wrote McConnell in a letter.

While McConnell’s statement gives no indication of how he will ultimately decide, the fact that the top Senate Republican would not rule out condemning a president of his own party is a striking indication of the uproar within the GOP and his relationship with Trump. In 2019, during Trump’s first contact with impeachment, McConnell was much more direct than Trump would be acquitted of charges against him – which he ultimately was in early 2020.
