KAMPALA, Uganda — Eleven people, including children, were killed in a fire at a school in a rural community just outside Uganda’s capital, Kampala, a police official said on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Luke Owoyesigire said the incident overnight took place at a school for the blind in Mukono district, without giving further details.

School fires have been a source of concern for education officials in the East African country.

Two dormitories at a major boarding school in Kampala were destroyed in separate incidents in 2020. No one was injured.

In 2008, 19 students were killed in a nighttime fire at a boarding school for primary school students near Kampala in 2008.
