Police: hostage-taking in the German city of Dresden

BERLIN– German police said a hostage situation was underway in the eastern city of Dresden following reports of gunshots being fired on Saturday morning.

Police urged people to avoid an area of ​​the city center and ordered the Dresden Christmas market to remain closed.

Radio Dresden earlier reported that shots were fired at a building near the main station.

German tabloid Bild reported that a woman had been killed. Police could not immediately be reached to confirm either report.
