‘Pochettino is an exceptional coach’ – New PSG boss hailed by Marquinhos after breaking duck trophy

The Argentine manager won his first piece of silverware just three games away from his tenure in Paris with the Trophee des Champions against Marseille

Paris Saint Germain Captain Marquinhos hailed Mauricio Pochettino as “an exceptional coach” after the Argentinian won the first trophy in his managerial career.

Only three games after his tenure as PSG boss, the former Tottenham, Southampton and Espanyol director won their first piece of silver as their team beat their Marseille rivals at the Trophee des Champions.

Mauro Icardi opened the scoring just before half-time before Neymar ended his return from injury with a late goal from the penalty spot, Dimitri Payet’s effort being only consolation.

The game was Marquinhos’ 300th in a PSG jersey, and he was delighted to cap the occasion with a win and another trophy.

“It’s a pleasure to be on the pitch, to be able to give everything to win games and trophies. That’s why I came to PSG, ”said the Brazilian Canal +. “There is a new coach with a new philosophy; it’s not always easy to change during the season but Pochettino is an exceptional coach. He talks a lot with the players and explains well what he wants.

“We thank [Thomas] Tuchel for what he has done here, for me because I have progressed well under him and he has shown me a new level of football that I never expected to reach.

Wednesday’s game was eagerly awaited after the cold-blooded encounter between the teams of League 1 back in September. Marseille’s 1-0 victory that day saw five players sent off in stoppage time next accusations of racism and brawling on the ground.

“Against Marseilles, we know it’s not always easy, ”noted Marquinhos. “It’s a team with a lot of commitment, but we like to play this kind of game.

“Overall we had a very good game. We have had difficult times but we are making progress and that is the most important. Both teams had excellent players to put together a good game and left what happened in the league game behind.

PSG will now turn their attention to Ligue 1, with the reigning French champions one point behind the leaders Lyon in the middle of the season. They will travel to Angers on Saturday before ending January with matches against Montpellier and Lorient.
