Perlucine breaks through with its organic cosmetics with oyster shell powder

With two kilos consumed per inhabitant each year, there is no doubt that the oyster is popular in France. But, beyond its taste qualities, the pearly shell hides many benefits for our body. For two years now, Perlucine, based in Allaire (56), has offered a varied range of certified organic cosmetics, with oyster shell powder as a common ingredient. Lauded by the brand of being “exfoliating, remineralizing and opacifying”, the mollusk has much to be proud of.

Shells collected on Breton beaches

It was Stéphanie Dabin who had the idea to promote the oyster differently. After violent winter storms, the director of Perlucine noticed an accumulation of mollusk shells on the beaches. The project was then born to harvest them to transform them into a real raw material. “Since then, ten tonnes of shells have been collected manually each year, on the beaches between the Côte de Jade and the Gulf of Morbihan,” says Perlucine.

Shampoos, soaps, deodorants, toothpastes

After having been washed, sterilized and ground into powder, the shells are mixed with other 100% natural ingredients such as white clay, in order to make shampoos, soaps, deodorants or even toothpastes. “The objective is to offer the most natural products possible, respectful of the environment and the consumer”, specifies the brand, which has obtained the EcoCert label. So, no preservative on the horizon for these products which can be kept for three to four months.

We are one of the only French brands to offer products in powder form

And this idea is not just window dressing: if three people worked full time for the brand in 2019, the workforce has now doubled. At the same time, 30 people from the Aquatonale laboratory help create the products. “What makes us strong is that we stand out from the crowd. In addition to using the oyster shell, we are one of the only French brands to offer products in powder form, ”says Perlucine. Nothing very complicated to use them, only a few drops of water are needed to transform the powders into foamy and creamy textures.

300 distributors and development projects

A formula that seduces, since nearly 300 distributors today offer Perlucine products in France. In 2021, the brand even won two awards in organic salons, one for its body balm, the other for its shampoo powder. Building on this success, Perlucine intends to further develop its range: “A conditioner, a moisturizer and a lip balm are being studied …”.
