Inter winger must now spend 10 days in isolation and could no longer play any role in the tournament
Ivan Perisic will miss Croatia’s Euro 2020 round of 16 game against Spain on Monday after testing positive for coronavirus.
Croatia are set to face Spain at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, but will do so without the Inter Perisic winger after the latest test results in the national team camp.
Perisic must now spend 10 days in isolation and could no longer play a role in the European Championship depending on the outcome of the clash between Croatia and Luis Enrique’s side.
What was said?
Croatian Football Association released a statement that said: “During the evening, the Croatian Football Association received the results of regular tests for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which showed that national team member Ivan Perisic tested positive for the coronavirus.
“The medical service of the national team isolated Ivan from the other members of the national team and immediately informed the relevant epidemiological service in detail of the situation, with proof of compliance with all protective measures against the spread of the coronavirus .
“Perisic will spend 10 days in isolation and during this period he will not participate in the matches of the Croatian national team.
“All other national team members, staff members and delegations are negative.”
What will be the loss of Perisic?
The 32-year-old has been an integral part of the national team for many years and has won over 100 caps for Croatia.
He was a huge influence in Croatia’s run to the 2018 World Cup final, delivering a man of the match display in the semi-final success against England before scoring in the final loss against France.
At Euro 2020, Perisic started Croatia’s three group matches, against England, the Czech Republic and Scotland.
He scored the equalizer in the 1-1 draw against the Czechs and the third goal in the 3-1 win over Scotland that secured the team’s place in the round of 16.
The bigger picture
Perisic now has to spend 10 days in isolation, it is very likely that he will no longer participate in Euro 2020.
As well as missing the draw against Spain, Perisic is also expected to drop a potential quarter-final date against France or Switzerland.
