Peng Shuai Said She Was Safe During Video Call, International Olympic Committee Says From Chinese Tennis Star

During the video call, the two men were accompanied by Athletes’ Commission President Emma Terho and IOC member in China Li Lingwei. CNN did not have access to the video.

“At the start of the 30-minute appeal, Peng Shuai thanked the IOC for its concern for his well-being,” according to the IOC statement.

“She explained that she is safe and well, that she lives at home in Beijing, but would like her privacy to be respected at this time. That is why she prefers to spend her time with her friends and family in this moment.

“Nonetheless, she will continue to be involved in tennis, the sport she loves so much.”

“I was relieved to see that Peng Shuai was doing well, which was our main concern,” Terho said. “She seemed relaxed. I offered to support her and keep in touch anytime she saw fit, which she obviously appreciated.”

According to the IOC, Peng accepted an invitation to dine with Bach, Terho and Li when he arrived in Beijing in January ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
