Pence seen reacting to a bid to force Trump out of office using the 25th Amendment in a documentary clip

Documentary film footage from British filmmaker Alex Holder recorded Vice President Mike Pence’s reaction as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi demanded the chamber invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump from the presidency during the last days of his term.

Mr Pence, who ultimately did not invoke the 25th Amendment, looks puzzled in the footage.

“I join the Senate Democratic Leader in calling on the Vice President to impeach this President by immediately invoking the 25th Amendment,” Ms. Pelosi said in the documentary clip. “If the vice president and cabinet do not act, Congress may be ready to move forward with impeachment.”

On the evening of the interview with Mr. Pence, January 12, the House passed its resolution calling on Mr. Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to declare Mr. Trump unfit to serve and remove him from office. Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois was the only Republican to vote for the resolution and is now one of only two Republicans on the Jan. 6 committee.

Before the House vote on the resolution, Mr. Pence wrote a letter to Ms. Pelosi in which he said he would not invoke the 25th Amendment because he did not believe it was in the “best interests of of our nation or consistent with our Constitution. ”

After the vote, Mr. Pence’s formal response to the resolution was consistent with his previous position.

“Under our Constitution, the 25th Amendment is not a means of punishment or usurpation,” Mr. Pence wrote. “To invoke the 25th Amendment in this manner would set a terrible precedent.”

The next day, the House voted to impeach Mr. Trump for the second time – only for the Senate to acquit Mr. Trump again days later and allow him to complete his term and potentially run for president again in the future. If Mr. Trump decides to run for president in two years, he could face Mr. Pence in the Republican primary.

In the documentary clip, Mr Pence is seen watching the hearing process unfold – at one point clearing his throat and reading a copy of a draft resolution on his phone and asking an aide to print him a hard copy.

The documentary says on a screen at the end of the clip that Mr Pence, who was at the center of plots to overturn the 2020 election result and keep Donald Trump in power, refused to speak about the events of January 6.

Mr Holder’s documentary series, filmed in the six months leading up to and following the 2020 election, will air in three parts on Discovery Plus later this summer. Mr Holder was deposed by the January 6 commission behind closed doors on Thursday.
